CATHY’S BUNNY BOOK was written by Don as a Valentine gift to Cathy. Both enjoyed the natural world and sought out wildlife areas in neighboring countrysides. Don, a West Point graduate and well-read student of the cosmos, was sometimes labeled as a sesquipedalianist, one who utilizes long, obscure words. Cathy, having graduated from a modest midwestern college, was sometimes known to consult a dictionary to understand what her husband had written.

Married 47 years, they lived in Waukegan, IL, New Orleans, LA, and finally, in Lexington, KY. Cathy visits Don’s final resting place, a granite birdbath installed in the backyard garden, a welcome site for wildlife, especially cardinal bird friends.

Having no children of their own, Don and Cathy took care to personalize the plants and animals in their Lexington, KY yard. Accordingly, they spoke of their pet Lucky-the-cat (Maine coon Felis catus): Lilly-linden tree (Tilia cordata): Zorilla-mama skunk (Mephitis mephitis): Oakley-bush (Hydrangea quercifolia). Of course, Fluffy and Little Liza Jane (Leporidae) were seen as visitors on many occasions.
